It is often difficult to orally administer the correct amount of medicine to children accurately and safely. Young patients refuse the medicines because many of them are bitter tasting. A leading pharmaceutical company has developed a new way of administering drugs to solve the problem, known as multi-particulate drugs.

Multi-particulate drugs are tiny spheres, measuring between 0.1 and 0.6 millimeters, with a protective coating. The coating neutralizes the taste of the actual active ingredient without impairing its effectiveness. Together, HS Design from Gladstone, NJ/USA, and the Medical Division of the Röchling Group have developed the new drug delivery system Sympfiny® specifically for this new way of administering drugs. It allows for simple and reliable administration as well as the exact dosage of the drug. This innovation makes the safe treatment of children considerably easier.

Sympfiny® consists of a container for the drug and an accurately fitting oral syringe for drawing and administering the multi-particulate drug. The oral syringe is connected to the container so that the drug can be precisely dosed, drawn and administered. A plastic part in the syringe allows the dosage to be set safely and transparently. This easy handling means the multi-particulate drugs can be administered as precisely and safely as liquid drugs. With the oral syringe, users can rely on a trusted and proven system that is standard with liquid drugs.

Safe and Precise Application
During development, particular significance was placed on the safe use of the delivery system. The design of Sympfiny® prevents the small spheres from escaping before and after the oral syringe is disconnected from the container and protects the drug from dirt and moisture. The drug is also protected through the use of drying agents. The dosing starts after a perceptible fitting of the oral syringe to the container, and is automatically stopped once the syringe is removed. After the application the oral syringe can be easily cleaned and re-used. The dosage can be preset by doctors, pharmacists or parents and ensures that the specified dosage is maintained even in the case of multiple uses.

The child-proof closure for the smart pack series from Röchling, which is also senior-friendly as standard, was used as external protection. The simple and safe handling of Sympfiny® is also reflected in its name, which is a combination of the words “simple” and “symphony.”

Production in the Clean Room
Sympfiny® is available in various container sizes as per the requirements of the customer. At the request of the customer, the oral syringes can also be produced in different sizes. Defined, customer-specific dosages are also possible.

For their production, the Medical Division of the Röchling Group has worked closely with HS Design across locations and contributed extensive development and process expertise. The container is produced at Röchling in Neuhaus am Rennweg, Germany, inside a classified cleanroom. The oral syringe and the closure are produced and completely fitted by Röchling in Brensbach, Germany, also inside a classified cleanroom. Röchling presented the system to industry professionals for the first time at the BIOMEDevice Conference 2017. Sympfiny® was awarded the innovation prize right away.
